At a time in our history when we need to be MORE informed than ever, too many of our major sources of news and information have caved to the pressure of their billionaire owners - Jeff Bezos at the Washington Post, and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Threads), along with Elon Musk as the owner of Formerly Twitter (X) - thus, we need to seek other reliable news sources. I want to recommend a few:
Maine Historian Heather Cox Richardson - you can find a button that links directly to her Substack on our homepage now. (if you're not familiar with Substack, it's a platform for writers to share their newsletters with a larger audience)
The Contrarian - https://contrarian.substack.com/ - founded by Jennifer Rubin and Norm Eison, when Jennifer left her job at the Washington Post following their refusal to run a political cartoon mocking the billionaires bowing to Trump.
The Bulwark - https://www.thebulwark.com/ - you can access much of their content for free, but they could also use more paid subscribers.
AP News has long been an unbiased source and you can follow them for free on Facebook - and yes, we are STAYING on Facebook so we can work to flood that platform with accurate information.
If you're more of a Progressive, Brian Tyler Cohen is terrific and on YouTube.
Democracy Docket, founded by attorney Marc Elias is a great source for legal news. He's on YouTube, but you can also subscribe to his newsletter via https://www.democracydocket.com/youtubesubscribe/.
UnderTheDeskNews is an independent journalist - also for the more Progressive among us - and she can be found on YouTube and Substack.
One last Progressive source is David Packman on YouTube.
If you're a news junkie, like me, you might also want to follow Reuters and Al Jazeera English - although they are more focused on international news, there will definitely be a lot of global issues with the current Administration pulling us from the Paris Climate Accord, his promise to end the war in Ukraine (in 24 hours but that hasn't happened, of course), his negativity towards NATO, plus his claim that we should "take back" the Panama Canal.
You can also find US on Facebook, where I try to focus on the most important things we should be responding to, so we don't get caught up in the "shock and awe" shotgun style of this Administration's enacting of Project 2025.
Let us know if you have any favorite sources or journalists.
