Democratic Governor's Candidate Forum

Washington County Hosts Governor’s Candidate Forum

While the primary election is still over a year away, the excitement is already building for Maine’s 2026 Democratic Governor’s primary. On Sunday, October 12, the Washington County Democratic Committee brought voters face-to-face with the candidates.

The Governors' Candidate Forum, held at the scenic Cobscook Institute, welcomed a diverse and engaged crowd as five hopefuls—Shenna Bellows, Jason Cherry, Troy Jackson, Angus King III, and Hannah Pingree—took the stage.

Over two hours, the candidates addressed a packed room and a live-streamed audience, answering questions directly from the people of Downeast Maine. Moderated by Lisa Marin, Chair of the Washington County Democratic Committee, the forum focused on issues of critical importance to local voters. Topics ranged from the escalating costs of healthcare and concerns over the future of rural hospitals to rising property taxes, the Maine Indian Land Claims Settlement, and the lobster-fishing debate regarding cost-prohibitive regulations on fishing gear.

“This forum is a prime example of democracy in action,” said Lisa Marin. “The candidates heard firsthand from the people they aim to represent.”

The conversation didn’t stop there. As the candidates shared their vision for Maine’s future, the energy in the room reflected the collective commitment to shaping a stronger, more inclusive state. The event was a powerful reminder of the vital role grassroots engagement plays in the democratic process.

Looking ahead, the Washington County Democratic Committee is already planning a Senate Democrat Candidates Forum. For more updates and details on upcoming events, please sign up for our newsletter.
